Day 3: There is so much more available in life, when doing less things at one time.

“It is when we are in transition that we are most completely alive.” – William Bridges

Mindfulness Consideration: The Power of Doing Less

Your life is a story of transition. You are always leaving one chapter behind while moving on to the next.

Transitions are often thought of exclusively as the big and life altering situations like a change in relationships, work or other circumstances. But we are also always in transition as we move from one task to another.

As you move through your day, notice how often you are going through tasks distracted, operating as a fragmented version of yourself as you split into one who does 4 things at once. How often are you doing more than one thing at a time? How present are you as you move from one task to another? When you are waiting in line to pay for your food order, are you scrolling on your phone? When you are working out or at the gym do you always have to be listening to music? How present are you while you are driving? Do you tend to need to call someone, text or even scroll while you are behind the wheel?

The more present we are in everything we do, the more available we become to the little moments of magic available in each moment. How many missed connection opportunities have passed us by because our heads are down in our phone? How often do we rob ourselves of valuable reflection time by needing to constantly fill our space with noise, music, television?

Can you challenge yourself, just for one day, to only do one task at a time? Simply notice how this feels. Is it uncomfortable to not fill every space with more? Does it feel peaceful and freeing to do less in each moment? See what insights arrive that are uniquely there for you to witness and notice within yourself. From there, you will know what (if any) changes might be worth introducing into the routine of how you move through your moment, your day, your life.

Journaling Prompts:

Bringing Awareness to Your Day

  • Write down what you did today, from start to finish.

  • How often were you doing multiple things at once?

  • Were there moments where you felt scattered or stretched too thin?

The Cost of Multitasking

  • Did splitting your attention make any tasks take longer or feel less fulfilling?

  • Did you miss any moments of connection because you were distracted?

A Single-Task Experiment

  • Think of one routine activity—drinking coffee, eating, walking, talking to a friend.

  • How would it feel to do this one thing at a time, fully present?

A Commitment to Less

  • What is one thing you can commit to doing with full presence tomorrow?

  • How can you remind yourself to slow down and be where you are?

We don’t need more time—we need to be more present in the time we already have. Life feels fuller, deeper, and more meaningful when we stop dividing our attention and allow ourselves to fully experience one thing at a time.
