Day 17 - How To Learn Your Finishes

“In wrestling the more time you spend in a situation. The more understanding you have of how you can move within the situation and where the exits are.”

- Andy Hrovat

What You Can Control

Over the next 21 days the focus of this class will cover the 5 areas you can control in combat, yoga and life.

  1. Yourself - Day 1-4

  2. Your Environment - Day 5-8

  3. Your Attack - Day 9-12

  4. Your Situation Day 13-16

  5. Your Finish Day 17-21

Our Focus Today Is How To Learn Your Finishes

"Yoga is a lifelong practice and this is why it’s important to keep showing up because there is always something new to learn."

-Em Hrovat

Combat

In wrestling, our 18 situations lead to 72 different finishes - 36 offense and 36 defensive. The reason it’s important to know all 72 finishes is that we need to have an understanding of what our opponent can do to us more so than we have to know what we can do to them.

Being able to predict where our opponent can finish allows us to minimize bad things from happening. Whereas knowing what we can do to an opponent will bring us to victory.

Yoga

In yoga your finish is the various transitions you can take pose to pose, and within the vinyasa practice there’s about 156 poses. This means there’s almost unlimited finishes within each pose with varying degrees of difficulty.

Think about some of the different poses you did today and the transitions used to exit them. Which transition was the most fun for you? Which transition do you want to explore more?

Life

In life your finish is the story that you tell yourself. In order for your story to grow you have to continually explore new directions to go. With greater experience you can start to envision a greater finish to your story.

Your challenge is take some time and think about where you want to finish 2021. We are still in the first month so dream big and create the best year ever.

A fun way to think about this challenge is to write down 5 examples of who you want to be, 5 things you want to accomplish and 5 things you want to have.

"When you master these 72 finishes and you compete with somebody with the same skill set. The sport becomes a battle of will."

-Andy Hrovat
