Day 18 - How To Improve Your Finish

“Today we focused on improving our finishes. First we start slow, then we set deadlines to create urgency and commitment to getting the finish.”

 - Andy Hrovat

What You Can Control

Over the next 21 days the focus of this class will cover the 5 areas you can control in combat, yoga and life.

  1. Yourself - Day 1-4

  2. Your Environment - Day 5-8

  3. Your Attack - Day 9-12

  4. Your Situation Day 13-16

  5. Your Finish Day 17-21

Our Focus Today Is How To Improve Your Finishes

"Start by moving through the poses really slowly, gradually building up to a faster pace."

-Em Hrovat

Combat

In wrestling there are progressions of how you go from learning a direction to using that direction against an opponent in a match. In training we start slow then increase the intensity and shorten the fight. With shorter fights the urgency to finish becomes greater which in turn increases the intensity of the fight and finish.

Yoga

In our yoga practice today we slowly built up a fun and challenging sequence. In doing so we started slow by first learning the poses that would be involved and the path to take from one to another. Then we increased our intensity by flowing with our breath to speed up the pace of the movements.

Think back to class - was there a time during the flow your body was able to move in the right direction before it was instructed to do so? - If so you just taught yourself to act faster than you can think.

Life

In life, your finish is the story you tell yourself. In your story you create your own value by the skills and experience you accumulate. When learning new skills, only through experience do you improve.

Your challenge is to write down one skill set you want to add or improve on this year. Then, write out three deadlines related to that skill and follow through with them.

"In life when we’re learning a new skill set the only way to begin is to go slow. But as we continue moving in this new direction it’s important to set deadlines to hold ourselves accountable to following through. "

— Em Hrovat
