Day 15 - How To Prepare For The Situation
“Today we are going to discuss how to prepare for the situation. In wrestling you have 4 attacks that lead to 5 positions and 18 situations. Since it is unknown which situation our attack will lead to we must prepare for every situation.”
- Andy Hrovat
What You Can Control
Over the next 21 days the focus of this class will cover the 5 areas you can control in combat, yoga and life.
Yourself - Day 1-4
Your Environment - Day 5-8
Your Attack - Day 9-12
Your Situation Day 13-16
Your Finish Day 17-21
Our Focus Today Is How To Prepare For The Situation
"The cool thing is the (yoga) practice also prepares us for the various situations we face in life that can be just as challenging as mastering a warrior 2."
— Em Hrovat
Combat
Using wrestling as an example there are only 18 situations we can get in after an attack. To be well rounded we need to train and study each situation on a consistent basis. Consistency over time is the only way to prepare for everything while at the same time finding what we want to recreate and what we want to avoid.
Yoga
The vinyasa practice consistently exposes us to a large variety of poses. There are about 150 poses in the vinyasa practice. Just by showing up each day we are preparing ourselves for the various pose combinations a class can have, creating more familiarity and creating room to have fun with the practice pose to pose.
Today, your challenge is to simply show up. Take notice how you physically and mentally respond to familiar poses and how you respond to unfamiliar poses.
Notice how your relationship with the practice has changed over the last two weeks. Notice how some poses have shifted from unknown to known and understood.
Life
It is easy to see how our lives are filled with different situations. We have work, family, friends, hobbies and much more. As we become more present in our lives the patterns of situations we find ourselves in starts to reveal itself.
Your challenge here is to analyze one situation that happened to you today. Write down how you were prepared for landing in it and something that threw you off a little that can be gained for experience next time.
"In combat you may have a preference as to which situations you want to get in to but with the nature of competition we have to prepare for the unknown. We have to be ready for any situation the match or our opponent throws at us."
— Andy Hrovat
