Day 7 - Slowing Down and Creating Space to Allow Our Mind to Gain Perspective

“Yoga is the art of meeting life as it meets you. Sometimes, the picture is too close to our face and we need to push things away a bit to see the bigger picture and get more perspective.” - Em Hrovat

An exploration into slowing down and creating space to allow our mind to gain perspective

Today's class is dedicated to slowing down and creating space to allow our mind to gain perspective.

We all have those things that tend to ruminate louder in our minds than others. Maybe it’s an unknown with your job, a rough patch in a friendship or relationship. A friend of mine, Laurel, who is a surfer for a living, talks about the things we do when we can’t see. When she is on her board and the water is murky, her mind can get the best of her, convincing her that there is definitely 100% a tiger shark directly beneath her board. We build things up so much in our mind.

“It’s easy to be in something when you can see in front of you, when things are clear. It’s easy to be in the water when you can see the bottom. One day can be murky and I can’t see my toes but I’ve experienced the same day, the wind shifts the tide shifts and all of a sudden I can see my toes again. its temporary its always temporary.” -Laurel Harrington

We have to give something space in order to find fresh perspective on it, to trust that even though you can’t see the bottom right now, you know that nothing is permanent, and that the things that are confusing right now will not always be that way .. clarity always comes with time.

Bring to mind a situation that you are overthinking or over managing in your mind right now. Give it space. If possible, let it go for an entire day (or three) and then come back to it. Notice the fresh perspective you have on the circumstance after taking that pause.

What are you clinging onto that is not serving you? What are you holding onto so tight that it doesn’t matter what comes up against you, you just hold it for no good reason?

“When you step away from what’s too close to your face, you are able to see things more clearly. Pause and take a breath so you can really see what’s there.”
